Growth habit usually 6-10 m, but often 0.3-1.5 m, bushy;
Leaves 3.5-8 x 1-3 cm, deciduous, leathery; oblong to lanceolate; apex obtuse or acute and mucronate; base cuneate or obtuse; margin flat, thick but not revolute, with 3-5 pairs of mucronate teeth from base to apex; dark shiny green above, glabrous or with some stellate hairs near the base of the midrib; dull, densely tomentose beneath, with appressed stellate and simple hairs, except on bigger veins; 5-8 vein pairs, slightly impressed above, prominent beneath; epidermis papillose; petiole 2-5 cm long, with stellate hairs;
Flowers male inflorescence 2-3 cm, hairy;
Fruits acorn 1-1.2 cm, shiny, pale brown, stalkless or nearly so; enclosed 1/3 by strongly warty cup; maturing in 1 year;
