Growth habit small tree, reaching sometimes 20 m tall; trunk to 0.6 m in diameter;  
Leaves 6-15 x 1.5-4 cm; elliptic, oblong-elliptic to obovate-oblong; leathery; apex shortly acuminate; base obtuse or cuneate; margin entire or with 3-4 serrations towards apex; hairless on both sides; nearly concolorous; midrib impressed adaxially; 10-14 vein pairs inconspicuous; short petiole hairless, not sulcate, 5-10 mm long;
Flowers April-May; male catkin 5-9 cm long, with short stamens; pistillate inflorescences 4-9 cm long;
Fruits acorn 1.7-2.4 cm long, 0.8-1.5 cm in diameter; obovoid to ellipsoid-obovoid; basal scar narrow, 5-7 mm wide, slightly convex; enclosed 1/3 or 1/2 by cup; cup thin, tomentose, 1-1.5 cm wide, with 5-7 concentric rings of scales; margin of 2 or 3 rings near base denticulate; stylopodium persistent; maturing in 1 year in October-November;
