Flowers July-August; male catkins 6-9 cm long, yellow flowers with 3-4 lobed perianth and 4-6 stamens; pistillate spikes short, 2-3 flowered with recurved stigmas;
Fruits acorn 1.5-2 cm long, 1-1.2 cm diameter; stalk 0.5-1 cm; enclosed 1/2 to 2/3 by cup; cup silky, 1.2 cm in diameter, with 6-8 rings of scales ; matures in 1 year;
