Growth habit 3-9 m tall, trunk to 40 cm in diameter; spreading crown;
Leaves 4-10 x 2-6 cm; late deciduous; subcoriaceous; oblong-oboval, oblong-elliptic to oboval; apex rounded or sometimes subacute; base rounded or subcordate; margin flat or revolute, lobed with short mucros, or sinuate-dentate with 4-7 pairs of short, blunt teeth; lustrous green above, often covered with stellate and fascicled hairs; dense whitish-grey tomentum beneath, made of the same types of trichomes as adaxially, hiding totally the epidermis; secondary veins 7-12 pairs, mostly flat adaxially, or remotely impressed, prominent beneath; epidermis pale green, papillose, seldom bullate ; petiole tomentose 0.3-1 cm long;
Flowers male catkins 6 cm long, with hairy axis; pistillate flowers 1-5 on a 3-7 cm long stalk;
Fruits acorn 1.7-2 cm; ovoid; in clusters on a strong peduncle to 8 cm long; enclosed 1/2 by cup; cup campanulate, 1.5-2.5 cm in diameter, margin strongly rolled inside; maturing in 1 year;
