Leaves 8-10 x 2-4 cm; oboval, oblong-elliptic  or lanceolate; leathery; apex acuminate in apical 1/3, base cuneate; margin toothed in apical half; hairless above; hairy or glabrescent beneath; young leaves densely orangish tomentose; 8-11 vein pairs; tertiary veins evident below; petiole 1.5-2 cm long;
Flowers March; pistillate inflorescences tomentose, 1.5-3 cm long, bearing 2-5 cupules;
Fruits acorn 2.5 cm long, 1.4 cm wide, oblong; 2 to 5 together; apex rounded, densely hairy at first; enclosed 1/3 to 2/3 by cup; cup half-round or campanulate, 1.5 mm thick, with 7-8 tomentose, sometimes denticulate, concentric rings; large, persistent stylopodium; maturing in 1 year;
