Growth habit reaches 20 m tall; trunk short, crown spreading;
Leaves 8-20 x 3-8 cm; evergreen or semi-evergreen; leathery, hard; elliptic to oblong-lanceolate; apex pointed, base asymmetrically rounded or broadly cuneate; margin denticulate from tip to base, or nearly so; green, glabrous above; whitish beneath at first with simple and stellate hairs, then glabrous and glaucous; 12-20 vein pairs and midrib impressed above, raised beneath; petiole 2.5-4 mm long;
Flowers May-June; pistillate inflorescences 2-5 cm long; 3 styles; 
Fruits acorn 1.6-2 cm long, 1.3-1.7 cm in diameter, ovoid to subglobose; brown; glabrous; sessile; clustered on a spike 2-4 cm long; enclosed 1/2 by cup; cup 1.5-2 cm in diameter, tomentose outside, sericeous inside, very thin (less than 1 mm thick), with 6-8 dentate concentric rings; scar 8 mm in diameter, slightly convex; stylopodium thick, with 3-4 rings; maturing in 1 year;
