Range Laos, Vietnam, China (Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Jiangxi, Tibet, Yunnan) ; 500-1800 m ;
Growth habit to 25 m tall;
Leaves 13-24 x 4-8 cm; chartaceous; oval-oblong or oblong; apex attenuate shortly acuminate; base cuneate; margin entire or with small teeth near apex; glabrous on both sides (young leaves densely orange brownish tomentose); whitish beneath; midvein slightly raised above; 10-15 veins pairs prominent beneath;  tertiary veins conspicuous; petiole 2-6 cm long, tomentose at first, becoming glabrous;
Flowers in March-April; male inflorescences 10-15 cm long, densely tawny tomentose; pistillate inflorescences solitary, 2.5-3.5 cm long, bearing 4-5 cups, with thick rachis densely orange-brownish tomentose.
Fruits acorn 3-4 cm long, 2-3 cm in diameter, 4-5 together on a 7 mm thick rachis (thicker than twig), almost all covered by thick cup; cupule campanulate, thick, with brown pubescence inside and outside, with 9-13 yellowish white pubescent, subentire rings; basal scar convex ; stylopodium persistent ; maturing in 2 years, from October to December;

bark grey, slightly rough; twigs pubescent ar first, becoming hairless; numerous lenticels;
