Leaves 2-8 x 1.5-4 cm; persist for 2 or 3 years; leathery; spathulate, oboval or seldom oval; apex obtuse, mucronate; base rounded to cordate; margins entire except some teeth in apical half; dark green, shiny, rough above, glabrous with at first some fascicled and stellate hairs; pubescent below with sessile stellate hairs, and solitary and fascicled ones, sometimes almost glabrous; 7-8 vein pairs raised beneath, at an angle of 30° with midrib; petiole 4-5 mm long, shortly yellowish hairy;
Flowers March to May; male catkin 2-4 cm long, hairy;
Fruits acorn ovoid or subglobose, 1.2-1.7 cm, apex tomentose, depressed; singly or paired on a short tomentose infrutescence 1 cm long; enclosed 2/3 to 3/4 by cup; cup with narrow, recurving, 5 mm long scales; matures in 2 years in October;
