Growth habit reaches more than 30 m tall; trunk to 2 m in diameter, and more;
Leaves 5-12 cm x 2-5; evergreen; very polymorphic; thick, leathery; oval to broadly elliptic; apex acute, seldom obtuse; base attenuate to cuneate, or on the contrary rounded to heart-shaped; margin slightly revolute, entire or nearly so, with sometimes some small shallow teeth at apical 1/2; shiny green, hairless above except some scattered hairs along midrib ; paler beneath, dull, hairless except sometimes a stellate tomentum at base of midrib; red when young; 5-10 vein pairs slightly impressed above; petiole hairless 0.5 cm long, dark reddish-brown;

Fruits acorn almost globose, 3-4 cm long and 3 cm wide; peduncle 2 cm long; cup shallow or bowl-shaped, enclosing less than 1/2 of nut, with appressed scales, hairless except their pubescent rim; maturing in 1 year;

Miscellaneous -- Sub-genus Quercus, Section Quercus, Series Leucomexicanae;
-- Species very polymorphous in leaf-form, leaf-texture, leaf pubescence and venation; these characters are often uniform on an individual tree, or sometimes vary on the same branch;
-- Close to Q.costaricensis, from which it differs in having leaf apex obtuse or pointed (always rounded in costaricensis) and abaxial leaf surface glabrous or nearly so (persistent axil tufts in costaricensis), but Q. costaricensis is in the Lobatae section.
