Leaves 3-6 x 1-3 cm; semi-evergreen; subleathery, chartaceous; subelliptic or oblong-lanceolate to oblong; apex pointed or obtuse; base narrowly rounded or cuneate, often asymmetrically; margin apically 3/4 toothed; glabrous above except on midrib; glabrous abaxially except some fascicled hairs near base; young leaves pubescent; 6-10 vein pairs slightly raised on both sides; tertiary veins evident beneath; petiole briefly tomentose 5-8 mm;
Flowers from April to June; male catkin 4-5 cm long, hairy; female inflorescence 1 cm, 2-3 flowered; style almost null, stigmas very short, thick;
Fruits acorn subglobose, 1,2-1,3 cm across; mucronate, silky, stongly adherent to half-round cup; solitary on a very short peduncle; cup covering 1/2 or more of nut, with not appressed scales; ripen the first year;

young shoots pubescent, becoming blackish, glabrescent, with lenticels; bud small, ovoid, obtuse, with puberulent scales; stipules 7-8 mm long, linear, ciliate at top;
Hardiness zone, habitat hardy zone 8-9; prefers dry, calcareous soils and mountain slopes; also in dry valleys;

Subspecies and
varieties

-- For Govaerts & Frodin, there are 2 varieties : cocciferoides and taliensis; for Menitsky and for Flora of China, these 2 names are synonyms.

-- Q.yiwuensis Huang ex Y.C.Hsu & H.Wei Jen 1976 (Acta Phytotax. Sin. 14(2): 85) is probably a hybrid with Q.aquifolioides, in Yunnan; small tree no more than 10 m tall, with cup scales longer than those of Q.cocciferoides, also more pointed and reflected.
