Growth habit more than 15 m tall;
Leaves 2-5 cm X 1-3; leathery but thin; oboval, elliptic or oval; apex obtuse, round or emarginate ; base narrowed, obtuse or acute, often asymmetrical; margin entire; young leaves with golden pubescence; adult glabrescent both sides except beneath at base of midrib; 4-6 pairs of secondary veins flat above, raised beneath, parallel forming an angle of 60-70° with the midrib; petiole thick, glabrous, flat above, to 0.3 cm long;
Flowers male catkins 2 cm long, few-flowered, densely golden-brown pubescent; male flowers 3 together,
Fruits acorn 1.5-2 cm long, ovate conical, pubescent; cup conical with 6-7 glabrous rings;

buds

smooth or furrowed bark, covered with thin plates; young twig covered with a dense, golden pubescence made of simple hairs, glabrescent ; bud subglobose, 3 mm long; stipules linear, densely rufous tomentose, 8-10 mm long;
