Leaves 10-15 x 3-5 cm; leathery, stiff; oblong-elliptic to lanceolate; apex shortly pointed or acuminate; base cuneate; young leaves pubescent both sides, mature leaves glabrous; bright green above; margin slightly undulate, with 2-6 pairs of short, blunt teeth along apical half; 10-15 pairs of lateral veins slightly raised above, prominent beneath; tertiary veins evident abaxially; petiole to 1-2 cm, with stellate hairs, becoming glabrous;
Flowers female inflorescences few-flowered ; flowers hairy, rusty, with  4-5 styles ;
Fruits acorn 1.3-1.8 in diameter x 1-1.4 cm long; flattened, with base truncate; yellow brown silky tomentose; enclosed completely or nearly so (except apex) in thin (2 mm), tomentose (inside and outside) cup; cup with 7-9 concentric, denticulate rings ; scar on the whole base of nut, convex; stylopodium persistent; maturing in 1 year;

bark pale grey, somewhat whitish; branchlets yellowish, stellate-haired but glabrescent, with numerous oblong lenticels; small bud, globose, 2-3 mm wide, with 4 pairs of rounded scales
